Poreless, hairless, and perfect model images are the typical standard for beauty brands on Instagram these days, with editing sometimes landing them in hot water. But M.A.C. Cosmetics decided to leave things natural in a post this weekend, which got their comments section buzzing in divided opinions.

The brand shared a photo of a model wearing their Chestnut Lip Pencil by makeup artist Matthew King. In the up-close photo, you can clearly see hairs on the upper lip (because, duh) and while some applauded M.A.C. for their realistic non-perfect post, others weren’t too welcoming.
“What about the mustache on her mouth?” critical users questioned, while another wondered why M.A.C. “Couldn’t Photoshop her whiskers out?”
A lot of followers caught wind of the hair-shaming and came to the models defense. Messages of support poured out with a popular one being, “To the model: we love and support you.” Others praised M.A.C.’s natural approach. “Love this image, keep up the good work, real is best!” an encouraging user wrote, while another called for beauty brands to “get real” because “Nobody is hairless right?”
M.A.C. hasn’t announced plans to keep their photos natural and unedited, but with support for imperfections like facial hair and shame-free acne on the Instagram rise, they should seriously consider it.
