It may sound strange, but your protein smoothie could either be making or breaking your weight-loss goals. Instagram user caloriefixes posted a side-by-side comparison photo of two protein shakes that look exactly the same but in reality are totally different.
The smoothie on the left contains 130 calories, while the one on the right has 530 calories. Wow — talk about a huge caloric difference. The left shake only contains protein powder and water, while the other includes protein powder, two cups of almond milk, one banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter, and one tablespoon of honey.
“There is lots of marketing and advertising regarding Protein Shakes, and It can all be a bit mind baffling,” caloriefixes wrote. “But at the end of the day, Protein Shakes can be a convenient source of protein and can be a great aide. At the same time, this post shows that liquid calories through shakes like this can get quite high, quick.”
It’s easy to just toss ingredient after ingredient into the blender, so if you’re trying to lose weight, be conscious of how calorically dense your smoothie ingredients are. “Your main focus should be getting enough true, real protein for repairing muscles, function of hormones + digestive health,” caloriefixes concludes.
