Christina Aguilera is on the cover of Paper magazine—but she looks almost unrecognizable. That’s because she’s virtually makeup-free, without any of the typical glam the singer goes for.

The magazine cover shot is an extreme closeup of her face, plus her hand with a “Mom” ring. (She has two kids, Max, 10, and Summer, 3.) Other photos from the shoot are just as makeup-free, though others experiment with out-there eye makeup and more dramatic hairstyles.

“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage,” she said. “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. She also talked about her time as a judge on The Voice, and why she decided to move on. “I can’t stay in a stagnant place for too long, which is why I think the position I was in with television just became very stifling,” she said. “I need movement, I need to go explore, be an artist, create and transform.” And that may mean a new album, since she hasn’t released one since 2012 and fans are getting pretty antsy.

Though Christina’s look for the magazine is stunning, it doesn’t mean Christina is going to pull an Alicia Keys and stop wearing makeup altogether. “I mean, I’m a girl that likes a beat face, let’s not get it twisted,” she said.
