She talked to ELLE.com about the joys of motherhood, reconciling accessorizing with little hands grasping at anything and everything, and more.

What’s your jewelry game like on a daily basis?

When I get obsessed with things that’s all I want to wear. Once I lock onto it, I try to be consistent because it becomes part of your personality, your signature style. I love gold and stacking, so the new Shine collection really speaks to my creativity and how I like to express myself with jewelry.

When it’s time to be a rockstar, be a rockstar at all costs.

Sleep in your jewelry or remove before bed?

I’ve learned my lesson the hard way with earrings—you have to be really careful. I did wear my Pandora honeycomb choker to sleep the other day because it’s cute, and I wanted to be cute when I was going to sleep. [In general,] it just depends on how you’re feeling and what the item is. If you don’t want to lose something, it’s okay to sleep in them. Being safe is key.

What’s your MO for buying jewelry?

The most recent purchase I made that was really meaningful was when I bought gold dog tags for myself and my husband when we had our most recent baby. They have our kids’ birthdates, initials, and [the number] three. I’m a big believer in giving things to mark a special moment.

How has your style changed since becoming a mother?

It’s definitely an interesting topic because as an artist and entertainer, you have moments where you want to be extravagant in your wardrobe, but your kids look at it like it’s a freaking play field. It’s toys all over your body! Accessories seem like toys to pull on. When it’s time to be a rockstar, be a rockstar at all costs. That’s my philosophy as an entertainer, but you definitely have to scale it back when it’s time to play with your kids so you don’t get torn to pieces.

Being a mom, something kicks into you about being smarter with the things you buy. Your mentality shifts a little because kids ain’t cheap. There’s so much that comes with kids, when you go shopping you start thinking about the affordable side of things. You become more cost-conscious. That’s the cool thing about this collection: You can get a lot of cool pieces that are really affordable. My kids have helped me to think better and more responsibly.

What’s been the biggest surprise about motherhood?

I always thought having kids and creating new life would be one of the coolest things and honestly, it’s surpassed my expectation. It’s been cooler than I could’ve imagined and double the entertainment I was expecting. They give you purpose and put things in perspective. I love being an entertainer, [but this] is honestly the best job I’ve ever had in my life.
