Dear E. Jean: I gave up my shot at law school because my boyfriend promised me marriage. Then, just before we became engaged, I found out he cheated on me (several times!) and I broke up with him. Nine months have passed, and we recently ran into each other. He told me that four months after we broke up, he proposed to this woman with a three-carat diamond ring he was going to present to me. I was shocked! But I congratulated him.

Now he’s sending me sexually charged e-mails and texts. It makes me so sad; the man is engaged! Yesterday he did it again, asking me to “come around to his place.” He’s treating me like common trash! What should I say back to him? —Counting on You
Counting, My Manx Cat: To him, say nothing. To the woman he’s engaged to? Call her and tell her everything. (Heavens, I’ve never in my life told so many people to tell so much to so many. I guess I’ve come to the conclusion that women—and men—need all the facts we can get…just to deal with each other.) Then think of going to law school, and never, never again wrap your future around a man.
