Shortly before Black Friday, I got a chance to do something every woman who has a soft spot in her heart for Sex and the City would love to do: Interview Sarah Jessica Parker at the new SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker pop-up shop in New York City. Located at 6 West 52nd Street, it was just as glam as you would expect it to be. Sixteen-hundred square feet, lucite chairs and industrial fixtures, and soft millennial pink walls serve as a backdrop to the collection. “We’re entering our 4th year and we only dreamed—as do most small businesses especially when they’re born in New York City—to have a home in New York,” Parker told me. “We thought that was many years from now, but we happened upon a partner who was really enthusiastic about opening a store in New York who presented this idea and the timing just seemed, though compressed, very exciting.” Read on for more fun tidbits from my chat with SJP, watch her try on as many shoes as possible in 90 seconds, then run (don’t walk!) to Parker’s pop-up shop that closes on Dec 3.

On her favorite shoe: “As monogamous as I am in my life, I don’t reach for one particular shoe. I have affairs is what I would say [laughs]. I think I’ve found the shoe that’s my favorite, but I won’t say it aloud because I don’t want to offend the others, and I’ll really build everything around and find a way to wear it and show it off and offer it up. But then another shoe may become my favorite because perhaps it more suitable for particular errands and chores and obligations. So I just don’t have a favorite. I’m completely devoted to the collection and I feel for the most part they are the only shoes I wear, but I think I’m a fair-weather friend. I’m not proud of that [laughs].

Her comfy heel hack: “No heel is going to be comfortable for hours and hours, so I encourage everyone to take their shoes off when you’re at dinner at a restaurant. Just slide them off a little bit, I do it all the time. It doesn’t mean you’re inappropriate or you’re behaving in a crude way, because they’re still on your foot, they just give your foot a little respite. So while you’re having a little respite give your foot one too.”

How she describe the collection in three words: “Quality, timelessness, and…a party for your foot [laughs]”

On running in heels: “I don’t really have a strategy; I think it’s been asked of me so many times over the years I just did it because I was contractually obligated to do so, not unlike kissing all those people I was contractually obligated to kiss. But, I found that it was something I could just do. I didn’t think about it, I wasn’t precious about it, I wasn’t particularly careful about it, I found the more challenging the shoe, the more excited I was. I once did a scene where I ran down the street in an Isaac Mizrahi red patent leather slide. It was probably like a 70cm or 90cm heel slide with an open toe. It was crazy! And we shot this scene over and over and over again on a small street in the West Village. They ran a dolly track the entire length from east to west of this block and I just ran and ran all day. And I was so excited. Everyone was like please be careful, do you want someone else to do this for you, and maybe we should slow down the run, but the more people threw worry and concern in my face, the more I was like I am going to run my ass off. And I basically tried to run faster than the camera.”
