Balmain to Design Costumes for Paris Opera Ballet

Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing is keen on collaborations–he just announced teaming up with L’Oreal Paris, sold out H&M stores when he made a collection for the retailer back in fall 2015, and created custom Kardashian Yeezy x Balmain outfits. Now, the designer is collaborating with the Paris Opera in what will be a very French match made in heaven.

Balmain is creating costumes for Renaissance, a new creation from choreographer and dancer Sébastien Bertraud (fun fact: like Rousteing, he’s also 30 years old and a Bordeaux native). According to a press release, the new ballet “celebrates the elegance, sophistication, and opulence of the legendary French dance academy [Ecole de Danse Française].”

Costumes will feature silver and gold embellishments, rhinestones and pearls embroidered onto bodysuits, tights, and draped shirts. Dancers will also be dressed in spencer coats, cardigans, and fringe skirts. On Instagram, Rousteing described his designs as “modernity meets classical, couture meets ballet.”

“It is an amazing honor to work with the Paris Opera,” Rousteing says, “There are few institutions that embody so well the essence of French culture and creativity. Obviously, designing for the rigors and techniques of classical dance was a new challenge for me and my team–but it’s one that we very much enjoyed facing.”

He continues, “As someone who has always been fascinated by the beauty and power of dance, this project was a joy to work on, giving me the unique opportunity to learn from and share ideas with a group of incredibly talented artists and craftsmen for whom nothing seems impossible.”

Renaissance will run at the Opera Garnier from June 13 through June 19.
